Castles were built on top of the highest peeks to watch out for invaders and invaders were spotted they would close the gate and could throw thing below on the invaders. The interiors of a castle included the great hall, the Keep that was a storage space for food, the barracks that was were the knights lived, the chapel, a place to hold religious services. Castles were designed to withstand siege and attack. Castles were most of the time not a comfortable place to live at.
The lord and his family were given warm heat and other amenities. Medieval castles were built for safety not comfort. Windows were just thin holes in the walls. The floor was stone so a lot of the warm air would not stay in. it was easy to repair anything that would become damaged.
